Tristan's Barn

Tristan made a horse out of paper at the 4-H science fun day but ran out of time to make the barn, he brought home the instructions and the determination with it. He has been bugging us with "when are we going to make my barn" for days and finally we made time to build it only to discover that we did not have any boxes bug enough to make it the right size. This made him so sad, but daddy came to the rescue with a promise of a huge box from work! He said he would bring it home on his next shift. I did not take any of these pictures because I was making dinner but he finally got to make his Barn. The photographer (aka Spencer) lost interest and forgot to take a picture of the final project or he used another camera, so I am going to have to add a final picture to the end.
Tristan loves building anything he can. But he loves loves loves horses and so this made his day.

Kids night at Govenors

It was kids night at the Gov.'s so we headed over. While we were waiting for our dinner to arrive we were entertained by the balloon guy who makes anything out of balloons. He is AMAZING. He made a parrot for Tristan which is hard to see the details in these pictures, and a baseball hat for Spencer. Chase who did not want his picture taken had a crocodile with an animal in its stomach. It was so cool! I am sad i did not get a picture of it. We love eating out because it is a rare treat.

Nanotechnology at the Children's museum

A few months back the Children's Museum had a whole day of "nano" science, since i had no idea what they were I decided we had better check it out and see what we could learn about Nanotechnology. The boys were not at all interested in any of the classes. They just wanted to roam around and play. Well it took some stern lectures and a little bribery and we headed off to the" nano" exhibit. First of all let me explain in case you don't know and so when I forget what it is I can come back and read this post again. A Nano is a short version of Nanotechnology, which is the  manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Very tiny molecules that make up bigger things. We saw things like liquids that use nanomolecules to make an invisible substance. When she put an object into this clear liquid it disappeared. The best experiment was making chocolate worms. When you take chocolate syrup mixed with water and drop it into a salt water solution the nanos in the chocolate react and form together to make these little soft and squishy jelly like chocolate worms which when rinsed in fresh water and dried a litle taste great on ice cream.
The boys had so much fun with this one and she helped them enjoy it more by reacting to their worms with words lke poopsicle to describe what Spencer had made. Of course Spencer laughed and made some more,  and I forgot for a moment to be disciplined and go with it. They were learning and haveing fun and being boys at the same time. I couldn't argue with that. SO here are pictures of our poopsicles. They were yummy once you got past the name.

4-H science fun day

We spent a full day at a 4-H festival ! It was so much fun and we did more science projects in one day than I think I have done the entire school year. Good friends, science, and gooey experiments, What more can a boy ask for right?
Density experiment
What happens when you mix three
liquids together that are all made up of sugar
and water?
Look at those faces as the try to listen to the
instructor and smile for the camera!
They are waiting for water to put in their cups

each cup has a different amount of sugar in it.
hmm what is he doing?
After adding water and food coloring to each cup
they stirred and then poured each color into
one tall glass.

Chase and his partner pouring his liquids together,

Pouring and mixing

Watching the instructor intensly

Stirring and pouring.
Look what happens when you add the
three liquids together?
WHY didn't they mix together?
What is happening?

Density experiment All three
liquids

After the experiment they got to mix all the colors
together.
Next table we learned about chemical reactions
this is a bowl of water and pepper.
Tristan is putting his finger in a bowl of dish soap
Look what happens to the pepper when he touches
the dish soap to it!

Pouring a bowl of milk

Adding drops of color

look at his smug face heeeheee :)

Now add some drops of dish soap to the milk

What is going to happen now

Chase's Silly putty
making silly putty
I had to copy the recipe so we could make it again

mixing the silly putty

using physics to make a marble track

Good teamwork Tristan and Spencer

They were concentrating pretty hard on their track
I love their determined faces.

This was by far the cooolest of them all.
Lava lamps.
Spencer waiting for his 6th alka-seltzer tablet
he would have done this all day if I let him.

Water, oil, and an alka seltzer tablet

Tristan watching it fizzle through the oil and
the bubbles were so cool and the brought the
color to the top of the oil.
So cool

Eco Bots
A tiny motor and a button cell battery
attached to a toothbrush and
voila a motorized brush!

Tristan was a little worried that his wasn't working
right but with the help of a new friend he got it working

Chase showing off his eco bot with hit buddy Zachary

Spencer learning how to make plantable paper

Spencer squishing his paper into his tray.
He made the paper, then put some tomato seeds
on one side and folded it over, squished it together
when the paper dries you can plant it in a garden and your
tomatoes will grow!
How cool is that?

Tristan is making a paper horse and stable. Very
cool indeed.

Chase made a duck tape wallet.
It was a fun filled busy day and mom needed a nap by the time it was over.
