Once upon a time three little boys were sent to clean their room and put away laundry. The youngest of the three was not too happy about the task at hand. Instead he decided to play tag with his brothers. While playing tag he jumped off his toy box and landed nose first onto a wooden
dresser drawer. Downstairs mom heard the laughter of three naughty boys, then a huge thud, and screaming followed by the running of little feet. With the running of feet and screaming came frantic calls of mom mom Spencer is hurt bad mixed in with Spencer's screams.
To my horror Spencer was holding a bloody nose and his whole arm was dripping with blood.
I yelled for dad and we assessed the damage. Yep he split his nose right at the tip and slightly to the left.......stitches!!!
We piled into the car and headed to quick care. We were told at quick care that there was too much damage for them to repair it there and we really needed to go to the hospital.
We called a friend to take the boys home and stay with them and daddy and mommy and Spencer headed to the ER.
When we arrived they were not ready for us like the quick care people said they would be, what that meant was we had to start all over again with registration and waiting; lots and lots of waiting and very little information. The nurse gave him some gauze with lidocaine on it to numb the pain and we were sent to the kids area to wait our turn.
With out thinking I bought us all sandwiches to eat while we waited. After 2 hours of waiting we finally saw a doctor and she called in an ear nose and throat specialist. He was going to need stitches and putting him under would be the best choice because of where the cut was. Oh and by the way when did he eat last????? I humbly said 2 hours ago,
In order to have surgery and not get sick from the anaesthesia he had to have nothing in his stomach for 6 hours. SO we were in for a very long night. They got him a bed in pediatrics and we were scheduled for surgery at 1 am.
He ended up with 6 stitches, four inside his nose to sew up the cartalage he tore and 2 outside to stich the skin.
He was a trooper and only cried when they put in the I.V. at around 10 p.m. He loved being the center of attention and showing off his nose bandage in the ER.
According to his report he saw 12 ambulances 4 firetrucks, and three construction trucks while waiting in the ER. The highlight of his night though was when he got back to his room after they put his IV in; a life flight helicopter landed on the helipad right outside his window. He went to sleep a happy boy and slept through the entire surgery.
When asked if he was going to do that again, he said I will make sure the drawer is always closed.
That is our life with Spencer!!!
