Why are candles part of the Christmas tradition ?
We know that Jesus is the Light of the World and that he is the Light that shines in the darkness.( John 1:5) so it's not surprising that candles are part of many Christmas celebrations and traditions. However there are other reasons why candles came to be popular at Christmas.
In the 17th century when the British controlled Ireland, harsh laws were enforced on the Irish. This included religious freedoms. Irish priests were driven out or sent into hiding. But on Christmas Eve the Christians placed 3 lighted candles in the window to represent Mary Joseph and Jesus. This told the wandering priests that they were welcome to come and rest and eat.
Maybe this Christmas you can light 3 candles for the Holiest Family_ Joseph, Mary, And Jesus and remember that Mary and Joseph were raising and protecting the Light of the World, the one who would bring salvation to all people !
