Discover Christmas Day Twenty

How did Nativity scenes become popular?

Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223. His was a "Live Nativity" with people and animals set in place to represent Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus in the stable. Soon similar "live nativities" and statues made of wood, wax, and ivory went on display at churches in different parts of Europe. Manger scenes in churches and other public places have grown in popularity. Every country has thier own style of nativity with Mary, Joseph, Jesus and the shepherds, and wisemen looking very much like people in that country.  Some are simple and some are very large with village scenes depicting other biblical figures.

A nativity scene in your home is a great way to help you remember the reason we celebrate Christmas.
