How did the custom of Christmas trees come to early America?
Did you know that early American settlers actually banned any thing that symbolized Christmas, people were only allowed to celebrate Christmas at church. If they hung decorations in there homes they were fined. They found the German settlers practice of decorating trees and or their homes was odd and somewhat Pagen, But then in 1846 the beloved Queen Victoria published a picture of her family in front of a Christmas tree in the paper. Her husband Prince Albert was of German descent. The Queen was so well loved that everyone wanted to follow her trends so when the Queen was seen celebrating Christmas with a decorated tree EVERYONE else had to have one. Who knew that back in the 1800's famous people started trends too. With in a few short years people all over America were bringing trees into their homes to decorate for Christmas. They used simple decorations like stringing popcorn and fruit on a string of garland and making cookies to hang on the tree as well. Families would sit around the fire stringing popcorn and reading from the Bible of the first Christmas night. We made a popcorn garland with the boys today and it took a very long time to do. And a lot of patience. But we did have a good time reading Christmas stories and being together.
