What was the role of angels in the Christmas story?
We find angels in most of our Christmas traditions and decorations. Angels played an important role in the advent of Jesus's life on the earth. The angel Gabriel first appeared to Mary to bring her the message that she would be blessed to be the mother of the Son of God and Savior of the world. " And the Angel came in unto her, and said, Hail though that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art though among women. Though hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus...." (Luke 1:28-33)
Gabriel later appeared to Joseph Mary's espoused. "The angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for e shall save his people from their sins." (Mathew 1:20-21)
Angels had a part in announcing the birth of Jesus, too. " And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people!" Luke 2:10)
What a powerful and humbling experience that must have been for Mary and Joseph to have an angel deliver such a message to them, and even more importantly to raise the Son of God, as their own. I am humbled by their love and humility for each other and for the Lord.
